Girl Scout Cookies

It's just about Cookie Go Day ~ a little over a week to go, and then the madness begins!

We start selling Girl Scout Cookies on February 5th this year. Girl Scout Cookie selling is officially done by Kelly and Paige, but it is a whole family event. For one, Mikey loves to help - he want to ask people if they'd like to buy Girl Scout Cookies and talk to people too. And DJ and Dad are invaluable, since they are the ones moving tables and transferring cases of cookies around constantly (and driving us to booths and the bank and meetings...)

Kelly loves selling Girl Scout Cookies. LOVES it. She plans it, practices it. Makes signs. Gets sparkle shoes to wear, so people will notice her. She was thrilled to earn going to Horse Riding Camp last year by herself and plans to do the same this year.

Paige earned her trip to London and Switzerland last summer.

So yeah, we are kinda into it.

This year - one of the top prizes is a PS4. So the boys have been very enthusiastic to help as much as possible.
In fact, DJ offered to wear this:

We will see how much he wants that new game console....

*see Kelly's sparkly boots?

We are also very excited that this year we will be getting to sell ONLINE!!!!!

Each girl will get their own ID (so you still need to know a Girl Scout) But then you can have cookies delivered to your door -- and be able to use a Credit Card
Yay

Exciting times right around the corner!

Son number One

It's not my birthday, or my oldest kids birthday that makes me start thinking about how much time has gone by. It's always Kid Number Two. Not this year so much, even though he turned 15.
Yep, Fifteen.

On January 10th.

Because his birthday is right after Christmas, it sort of sneaks up on us. We plan his gifts when we plan Christmas presents, but it really is difficult to ever do a party.
It's still during Break, so that was difficult when he was little....

This year, he wanted to movie hop with his friend all day - and the rest of us had plans, so we sang in the morning and gave him his Crazy Chocolate Cake I made. It was 4 layers of a 6" cake with mini chips on the side. Twix Bars and Milky Way Bars chopped up on top and then a Hershey Bar melted on top of the whole thing.

He didn't have to share.

He did a little happy dance when he saw it.

DJ at fifteen.

Well he isn't homeschooling it anymore. He wanted to go to High School with his sister. Well, he wanted to go to the same high school that his dad went to (never mind that I went there too, I don't count)
He's trying new things. Even if I have to force him at first. He's still doing well in school. We have had a couple of things come up. With kids. Now with a teacher. It's okay. He has to learn how to get along.

He hated Cross Country at first, now he loves it and is also joining the Track Team

It's funny, he and I argue - but I think it's because he reminds me of my brother at that age and I go into the Big Sister Your Annoying Me mode. I didn't realize it for a while, and I was just furious with him, like All The Time! Then I heard, HEARD my brother's voice come out of his mouth, and I went...ohhhh. So I don't get into it with him as much anymore.
And he's taller than me.

Mikey ADORES him right now. DJ tries really hard to be a good Big Brother to him.

He is a really great kid. He's kind. And thinks the world should be fair to everyone. He gets super excited over the wildest things. He wants to be funny, but he's not...BUT he finally-FINALLY is getting other people's humor OR playing it off until we can explain it. I think Fifteen is going to be a fun year for him!

Iron Man

All of a sudden, our little baby has become a big kid.
And I have to admit, that all of those things you hear about the baby of the family being spoiled and getting away with everything is true --

Mainly because we are just too tired to enforce all the same rules that we had for the older ones.

The 'baby' became enthralled with Iron Man because I gave him my iPod to distract him from bothering us while we were getting his older brother used to the Homeschool routine. It has a video of the song from some cartoon show or something... My iPod has our entire library on it, in case -- gasp! someone leaves their own iPod at home and can't get to their playlist.
So I have also let the big kids bend the TV rule about only watching shows that are age appropriate for the youngest in the room
(which I admit, has become more difficult to do as they have gotten older and uh... I've uh... added more kids to the mix...)
and Mikey ended up watching some Iron Man cartoon thing and he was hooked!

Santa brought him lots of Iron Man things -- and the older ones liked the Avengers movie, but really, I don't know anything about Iron Man. I know Superman. I know Xmen. I know even know a little about Spider-Man and Batman, though those two annoy me. But, I'm not up on the Iron Man.

I have this thing. I don't know what to call it. If you have something -- I want the set. I had the Nancy Drew Books as a kid. #4 Well, I'm not reading #4 until I get #1-3. Never mind that they aren't in a series or anything. And if I bought a Blues Clues toy, you know I was not only getting Blue and Steve, but Magenta, Periwinkle, Shovel & Pail and anything else they made.
Come on. We have a Thinking Chair --
You don't even want to know how many Beanie Babies we have. Or Little People.
I'm trying to Stop It.
Mainly because it sounds crazy.
(yes, my husband knew all of this before he married me)

So between not knowing much about Iron Man, and making a real attempt to Stop It (you know, the weird compulsive thing) I'm guessing we are all set with the Iron Man stuff! ....?

Another thing the older kids were never allowed to do, is ask for things when we were at a store like Target. Yes, even when they were little. Paige never asked to. Yep. Really. I let her play with a toy and then we put it back when we walked out of the aisle. Different story with the next two. When DJ and then Kelly came along and we went into places, even the market, and the "can I have" started -- 18 months, 2? I would tell them, "next time I won't let you hold the toy if you complain when it's time to put it back"
Or
"next time you won't get to come into the store with me"

-- it's not like they'll bust you out at that age! They don't turn it back on you and say, 'Oh yeah, what will you do then? Leave me in the car?'

Yes, I have four kids. But I'm not used to them asking for things when we are in a store. Even now, the big kids have to really want something to ask for it -- Paige will even offer babysitting money for blackberries when they are in season! Besides, if they show an interest in anything, their crazy mother gets them the series/set/pair.
Keep in mind though --

I do a lot more shopping online now than ever before.

The Baby gets away with a lot more than the older kids.

and I just needed a couple things from Target

How am I supposed to resist, "Mama can I have this at my house?"!?!

Daddy let him choose one and he walked over and put the other back -- but I am pretty sure it was to keep me from buying all the accessories to go with it.

I'm back

I've been MIA from the blog world for quite a while. Life got a bit hectic, well more hectic than usual, and it seemed more and more difficult to start back up again.
Things are really no less hectic -- but, maybe I can manage at this point?

So that's it for today.

Nothing about the kids.

I'm just back.

Happy New Year!

Happy 2013 ~
We had a great Winter Break. The kids played and we just relaxed and hung out with them.
Mike and I watched the entire series of the Walking Dead and we are almost finished with Downton Abby, so we are right there with the rest of everyone else now!

It's Back to school Monday, and I wish we had another week off --

Lady Gators

We finally had a bit of sunshine last Saturday, so Kelly had her first game -- and Dad did a great job as coach

Go Gators!!!!

The girls had a blast
and they actually ran (well, mostly)
They played the Convent Kickers who were in pink, which was a big thrill to all
Kelly says her favorite part was high fiving and saying "good game" at the end. And snacks. And scoring goals.

I think we have another soccer player!

our eventful night

Monday April 2nd started out an odd day. I went over to
Washington High School to register Paige for  high school. And while I was happy that she got into Wash -- I was still registering Paige for high school...
>sigh<
I still hadn't fully processed the whole thing and we all had an uneventful evening -- all the little ones were in bed and Paige was just going too after finishing up her homework.
It was around 10:20pm

Paige appears in our room with a look of horror on her face -- and quietly says to us, "You guys have to come right now. I don't think DJ is breathing"
Both Mike and I fly down the stairs into his room.
DJ won't open his eyes or respond, but he is breathing.

We have no idea what is going on.

Mike tells his dad to call 911.
Somehow Paige tells us she heard him coughing, and then making a loud gurgling sound so she got out of bed to check on him.
By the time Vic walks downstairs to open the door for the paramedics, they are here.
DJ is still not responding.
Paige is upstairs with Mikey and I think Vic went up there too.
Around this time DJ is coming out of it enough to be terrified of all the commotion and recognize Mike.

He keeps crying/yelling "Dad. Dad. Dad"
and fighting off the paramedics who are trying to start an IV.
Mike had to hold him down.
I think there were about 8 paramedics and firefighters in the room.

At this time they tell us it was probably a seizure.
Which is a relief to Mike since he thought DJ had a stroke.

They get DJ strapped into a sitting gurney and carry him downstairs and outside where he was transferred to another gurney, screaming for Mike the entire time.

I will tell you, nobody is better in a situation than my husband. He always knows how to handle things and he makes everyone feel secure in that knowledge. He knows how to fix anything that breaks -- or who to call if he can't (and he knows when he can't) He knows how to treat people. He's the guy that all the women at the market ask to reach things for them off the top shelf. He is that confident in everything he does.
But at this moment in time, with DJ calling for him, he can barely hold it together.

I'm sitting in the ambulance with DJ and one other guy who is asking me questions. DJ is still scared, but he is there.
He keeps asking, "Mama, may I please not ride in the ambulance? Mama, may I please just stay home?"
When the paramedic guy asks DJ if he has blurry vision and DJ response is,
"Well, it depends. I don't have my glasses RIGHT now. And I need my glasses or things are blurry. And I think I left my glasses on my nightstand. But usually, WITH my glasses I do not have blurry vision"
I figured he was okay.

In the ER.
Hooked up to everything. DJ is fine. Explained to him what was going on. He is just thrilled to be watching iCarly...
I'm texting Paige. She is quite upset. She's in our bed with Mikey who won't go to sleep. Kelly never woke up for any of it --
Paige is beating herself up wishing she had gotten out of bed to check on DJ sooner. We call her and both Mike and I reassure her that she did exactly the right things. She wants to talk to her brother to make sure he is okay.
DJ has a CT scan.
We are asked to explain about his ear implant, but everything looks great.

I did know a little bit about seizures, having read about febrile seizures when the kids were babies. I knew that the seizures might be scary, but usually weren't harmful. That people got hurt by hitting their head or something during them -- not from the actual seizures.
The ER doctor explained that DJ might never have another one in his lifetime and that the type he had (what used to called grand mal) didn't happen frequently, so go home, and check in with his pediatrician tomorrow.
We were home by 1:30am

Mike brought the air mattress up and we set it up in our room.
We are all exhausted, but DJ was still thrilled to be up so late -- we all stayed up for awhile. Talking, getting Paige to bed and just trying to get things situated for the morning.
Mike and I both fell asleep right before 4am and DJ was on his way, but the tv was still on.

Close to 4:30 I hear this awful gurgling, choking sound and yelled for Mike just as he heard it too. We both rush over, Mike gets DJ on his side. His eyes are closed and he is completely tensed up. I keep my hand on him, talking to him, as Mike calls the ER.
The doctor tells Mike to wait about 15 minutes and slowly try to wake DJ. If we can't wake him, bring him back to the ER. If he seems okay, call his doctor in the morning -- he will most likely have to be admitted to the hospital for tests.
Twenty minutes later, DJ is in our bed with me (and Mikey) and happy to chat about Dances with Wolves, which we are now watching.
About an hour later, I fall asleep. Mike stays up with DJ.
Mike wakes the girls up for school, they get ready -- he calls DJ's school and wakes me up so I can call Dr. Lee's office while he takes Paige and Kelly to school.
DJ is still awake, so I turn off the tv and tell him to try and sleep. He is out instantly.
I call the office right at 8:30, it's still the service. I call again, the same.
I am sitting up in bed, facing the pillows -- DJ and Mikey are both asleep.
I see DJ's mouth twitch in an odd way.
I move closer to him, between the boys.
DJ's entire body tensed up. His face was pulled and his eyes were wide open and blood shot. He had one arm pulled in tight to his body and the other extended.
His lips started turning blue.
I started to feel panicked -- I looked at the clock, it was almost two full minutes.
All of a sudden his body released the lock on itself.

I knew it would be at least 15 minutes before he would come to. I called the doctors office. They said to take DJ to UCSF emergency room.
As soon as Mike returned from dropping off the girls, I got dressed, got Mikey dressed -- and DJ was still out.
I took him much longer to come back this time. He was very wobbly and was sick in the car right as we pulled up to the hospital. His speech was still slurred when the doctor came in to check on him.

Meanwhile, Mikey decides he is going to be
The Happiest Toddler Ever
and is making me insane. He is playing peek-a-boo with nurses and running in circles and high-fiving everyone.
>sigh<
I do not have the patience for one more person telling me how cute he is...
Thankfully, a friend came and picked him up. (Thank you Misty!) She also picked up Miss K and brought them to her own kid's dentist appointment -- and back to her house. Mike O signed Paige out of school and dropped her off.
Our 7 hours in the ER would have been so much harder if we didn't have such great friends.

So, DJ slept (while we watched every twitch) for about 45 min and then was woken up by the pediatric neurologist who needed to examine him.

Then he was hooked up to an EEG

and he wouldn't go back to sleep.
He did make me take a picture of his brain though --

The neurology team that came in following the EEG explained that they were going to treat the 3 seizures like they were 1 big one. That the type they think he had usually show up on both sides of the brain not just the right side like DJ's does. And the type they think he had usually starts at a much younger age.
They want to do an MRI, and see someone in the neurology clinic since they really still have no idea what is going on with him.
We go home.

I call for the MRI, it's not in their records... the person who can help me is out of town... The neurology clinic people call on Thursday and the earliest they can see him is May 1st.
ok
But The doctor might want to see him earlier after she looks at his chart. They will call me.
ok
They call me Friday late afternoon. They want to see him first thing Monday morning. Please call their office if he has another seizure.

what? That doesn't freak me out or anything.

Monday morning. More tests. The doctor THINKS he has benign rolandic epilepsy, BUT it isn't showing up correctly on the EEG. She called it a "developmental" epilepsy. But he has no family history, isn't the age that these things start (6-8yr) and the abnormalities on his brain are different than in benign rolandic epilepsy.
...ok
Since his CT scan was good, they'll wait on the MRI, but they want another EEG. One while he is sleeping.
BUT it could very well be something else going on in his brain,
they don't know.
The seizures might happen once a month, but maybe more often. He should outgrow them within 5 years.
The good news being they will probably only happen in his sleep.
They gave me a medication to stop them if they last for more than 5 minutes.
Now we are just waiting to hear from them to schedule another EEG.

He is back at school today.

daisy ice cream

Our neighbor brought these over for the kids!

The little flower pots had mint chocolate chip ice cream in them -- with a mint oreo in the bottom.

 So adorable!

I think we should try and make them for our Daisy Girl Scout Troop ~

my new do

A couple of weeks before Kelly decided to cut her hair, I got a new haircut too.

Mine was not quite long enough for Locks of Love though...

My friend Monica who works at Twenty Four Twelve Fillmore did it and I love it!

My baby likes it. He keeps pointing to my hair and saying "pretty" ~

And best of all, my husband REALLY likes it! I think I will be getting my hair done more often --

rainbow cupcakes

I have been wanting to make these Rainbow Cupcakes that I saw on a Facebook post -- I was holding off making them for a special occasion.
I figured Kelly's first soccer game as a Lady Gator would be good -- since it was also her BFF"s birthday.

Her first game ended up being rained out.
But I made them anyway!

I planned on topping them with whipped cream for the girls, but the kids (and Grandpa) ended up eating most of them plain -- I did make a little though

They were super easy, but a bit time consuming -- I will definitely be making them again!

locks of love

Kelly has been asking to cut her hair for a long time. She REALLY wanted to do Locks of Love like her cousin Solana.
I had her convinced that she should wait until 1st grade -- or so I thought!

Lately, she had been asking me again --- and then she went and asked her dad, who did it himself 10 years ago,
and that was it.
We brought her to have it done last week.

The hairdresser cut off 15 inches!
(and had a difficult time sawing though it)

She was soooooo HAPPY!

She keeps telling everyone about it and loves the reaction she gets ~

After all, Rapunzel cut her hair off too!
