rockin' the baby

Last month I linked up over at
Things I Can't Say showing off the last bump

It was super fun
checking out all the other bumps ~

And now, she is letting us show off all our baby pictures!

I do have a TON of those --
But most of the ones of the older kids are stored in the basement. I am sure I can find some adorable ones of them that I could scan and save and edit and put online, but I have decided to choose a couple of my favorites that maybe have been seen before, but have already been scanned (at least)

Here is Paige. She is a year old here and only 17 lbs. She is our Little Elf. She was really bald up untill around this time, but I don't have a picture scanned of her younger than this!
(maybe I should get on that) Now she is 13.

DJ was about 4 months old in this one. By the time he was six months, he had tripled his birth weight and was 20 lbs! He had so much hair he looked like a Little Man ~
He still does even though he's 11 1/2.

Kelly is not quite 6 months here and not quite 20 lbs. She started out the biggest -- at 9 lbs 14 1/2 oz! She is our Sasquatch. Yes, it because she is hairy and has big feet. (she does!!)
She is 5 now and about to start Kindergarten.

Here is Mama's Boy! Mikey at only 2 months old. I don't remember how big he was here, but he was 9 lbs at birth.
He is 21 months now and more Big Kid than Baby.

Oh man, does it go by fast.

the last bump

I am linking up to show off my last bump ~ I have pics of me of the first three, but that was {cough} pre-digital and I'd have to (find them) scan them. And if you know me, even a little, you know that I take a ton of pictures -- and have very few with me in them.
So here is my Mikey Bump at 38 weeks.
He was 9 lbs and 20 inches when he was born, but he was not my largest baby.

Kelly was 9.14 1/2 and 22 inches!
DJ was 6.8 lbs and 21 inches
Paige was 7.14 and 21 inches

and here is the crew right before the baby brother showed up

gaga

The big kids are always saying things to Mikey to get him to repeat it back to them. He did say all their names first, but wouldn't say Mama for the longest time. His pediatrician said she had a theory about it -- she had seen it before in other babies that hit their milestones early, so she thinks that to them they are aware that Mama IS. Mama is everything, so they don't need a name. Sounded good to me! Once he started saying it, he only said it when he was crying... but he says it all the time now.
He says Paige in a French accent, "PAyJuh-ha" which is pretty cute.
We get to DJ's school and he starts yelling "DJ" at the top of his lungs.

He has said "gaga" for the longest time. The kids will get him going and they are all saying "goo goo gaga" back and forth in a goofy sort of way. I always thought it was pretty funny to have him say it.

Mikey loves Lady Gaga's music. Paige shows him the videos on her iPod all the time. We will put it on in the car for him and soon they are all singing to it.
The other morning I was trying to get ready and I needed to distract him from throwing all the clean clothes out of the basket (not a fan of that trick) so I put a video on the computer.
He points, "Gaga".
huh?
We are driving home and he is yelling at Paige, pointing to her iPod, "Gaga!"
ok.

Is this what he has meant this whole time and we just misunderstood? Does he think we are just morons?

I don't know, but it is from the baby that calls every ball a football --

hats

I had a miscarriage the year before I was pregnant with Mikey. I was very upset about it and when I did find myself pregnant again, I was extremely stressed out the first four months -- and longer, if I am truthful.

I love being pregnant. Really. I feel like I fit into my skin.
So being afraid was a new thing to me.

And so I made hats.

My cousin had recently had a baby and BOTH of my sister's in law were pregnant too! In fact, one of them had a due date 8 weeks before mine and the other one 8 weeks after ~

{You can read all about the journey my brother's family traveled, in the
beautiful blog that Cyndi made
and even turned into a scrapbook at Our Young Shoot Chloe }

As you can see, I made mostly girl hats. I did make a couple for my nephew Zeppelin, but I forgot to take pictures of them. {g}

I am really not very good at making a certain size. I sort of just guess. There is a way to do it, with yarn weight and hook number, but do I take the time to figure it out? Nope. I just start crocheting.  So I figure that most of them never fit any of them. I did make my cousin a blanket -- well, a blanket and an odd size 'lovey' (a 'lovey' because it sooo didn't turn out how I expected)

I did make Mikey a blanket and hat (that fit him!) that he wore ALL the time until I couldn't roll it up anymore.
He is saying 'touchdown" in his sleep here ~

I made another for my cousin's older daughter (modeled by Kelly)
and one for Mikey
that he never keeps on his head

and another one for Chloe when she came home -- because none of the others I made fit!
Haha

(yes, I DO know how cute she is!!!)

So go figure that I am making a hat now.

For Paige. For her trip. To Olympic Park. For a WEEK.
(am I starting to stress?)

I am not finished with it. I am making a goofy looking 'flower' for the top.

Paige has always been a hat girl She wears the ones I made that started out as baby hats and ended up fitting her -- all the time.
(at home)

She picked out the yarn.
The colors are pretty.
It's soft and warm.

At least it fits.

walking

Paige was a little peanut and with hardly any hair, so she looked like a baby for a long time. Being my first baby, I encouraged her to do everything. She was always strong. Picked her head up and looked around when she was a day old -- I did not know babies could even do that! So when she was seven months old you found me putting her hands on one of those baby walking toys so she could "walk" back and forth between two people. She loved doing it, but it looked so funny -- she was all of maybe 12 lbs and no hair and looked way too little to be walking!
She ended up taking her first steps on a vacation to Hawaii when she was 9 months old. I was so thrilled!

DJ tripled his birth weight by 6 months old and weighed 20 lbs. He was a Big Boy! But DJ was 'floppy' (for lack of a better word) and never tried to stand or anything. In fact, he never really held on when you carried him.
* I herniated a disc in my back with this guy, but that is a story in itself --
I really believed that there was no possibility that he would walk as early as his sister did. I never coaxed him like I did with his sister. I had learned my lesson. He was already a fast crawler -- I did not want to chase him any sooner than I had to. Well, I was wrong.
DJ also walked at 9 months.

You know, Kelly was really strong too -- maybe it's a girl thing.
By the time she came along and was getting to the 'let me just pull myself up to stand' stage, I was discouraging her from doing it. Her Father and her Grandfather would ignore my warnings and clap their hands for her and try to get her to take steps to them when she was only 7 and 8 months old.
(HA! I warned them)
Even with all the confusion in her life, Miss Independent walked at 9 months too.

I am pretty convinced at this point that it has to be genetic right?
I walked at 10 months
and so did Mike.

Lately I get people either asking me if I am holding him or exclaiming over the fact that Mikey can walk.
I'm thinking:
Uh, Yeah. He has only been walking half his life.
Because with this last one I was just resigned to the fact that he would start walking when he was
9 months old

and he did

Only this one RUNS!

baby board books

Kelly is now a reader for sure!

We were just watching Shark Men (our favorite new show -- they tag and release Great Whites!) and they were showing a map of where the sharks were traveling.

Kelly yells out, "They went all the way to Hawaii!"
I'm all, "Yes, they did" -- then I realized she read that!

We have not really even worked with her on reading skills, other than giving her books and answering the never ending question of "How do you spell that?" (which goes along with the constant telling of addition facts up to 10....)
Oh, and all the kids love to read to each other, which I am sure helped her.

They were just picking a story to read to Mikey and it occurred to me that he doesn't have a
favorite yet --

Paige's favorite book as a toddler was Moo, Baa, La La La
by Sandra Boynton
Moo, Baa, La La La (Boynton)
She had it memorized when she was around two years old. It was the funniest thing, she'd hold it and say all the words very clearly and it looked like she was reading it. Too cute!
There is an app for the iPhone/Touch that reads it to you and you can touch it to make all the animal sounds. Mikey can't really do it all by himself, he hasn't mastered 'turning' the page, so Paige does it with him.

DJ's favorite was Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
by Bill Martin Jr/Eric Carle
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
I cannot even come close to guessing how many times Paige and I both read this to him...
He LOVED that book!
When we turned the page to the picture of the Green Frog, DJ would yell, "Watch Out!" every single time we read this story!
I don't know why, but he did it every time.

Makes me think about him back then...
DJ was such a cute little guy ~
He looked just like a little man!

Kelly has always had a strong personality.
(yes, that is what we call it)
I had all these wonderful books for her that I saved from Paige and DJ. All in pretty good condition too. They were never chewed on or colored on, and then Miss K came along and she loved destroying all the baby board books. {sigh} She'd peel the corners and rip them to shred.  Drove me nuts.
Her favorite book was Snuggle Puppy!
by Sandra Boynton
Snuggle Puppy! (Boynton on Board)
(I like Sandra Boynton)
I still sing her the song from it. I'd like to read this one and even Moo, Baa, La La La to Mikey, but
Destructo Baby got to them.

Mikey does like his Trucks book. He gets it out of the basket and sits and 'reads' it himself. Maybe it's the size or the colors, or because he can slide the tabs. It just doesn't have a story.
Slide and Find - Trucks I guess maybe I can count it as his favorite for now.

versatile blogger award

Being fairly new to the blogging world, I feel very grateful to be one of the winners of the
Versatile Blogger Award!

I would like to say Thank You to Chauny from Chauny Writes! for kindly choosing me! Chauny Writes! is a blog that I just found and was immediately drawn to. Chauny describes herself as a "Writer, Encourager, and Motivator. Writes Self Help works that motivate and Inspire!" How could you not love that?!
Please stop by her blog Chauny Writes!

the rules of the Versatile Blogger Award are as follows:

Thank the person who gave you the award by linking back to them in your post.
Tell us seven things about yourself.
Award fifteen recently discovered new bloggers.

seven things about me:

1) I used to be obsessively organized, but I have let that go (for the most part)
I had to have every one's clothes categorized on colored hangers and all the kid's wooden puzzle pieces and their doll house and their books had to be in order if they weren't playing with them. I would still be like that if I had time to do it -- and if my husband didn't make fun of me for it. My stomach still hurts sometimes when I can't find the 'whole set' of something.
2) I was an Army Brat and I hated moving. Until we moved to San Francisco when I was 14, I went to a different school every 18 months or so. Some people thrive in that environment, I did not.
3) I was my Grandma's favorite.
4) I am head over heels, madly in love with my husband -- and it makes me mad that he knows it. If you know Mike, you know what I mean and can feel for me. It even makes me all girly and weepy to think about it.
Ick.
5) I never understood what love was until I held Paige. I remember just staring at her and being overwhelmed by this feeling of having always known her. Before and after, forever.
6) At times I have the sense of humor of an eight year old boy, and I am never sarcastic.
7) I think my kids are The Best and The Most Adorable kids on the planet. I really do. I know there must be other cuter kids out there, and I know you are supposed to think all of them are cute in some way... but, I like mine The Best.
-- I also have some majorly freakin' cute nieces and a nephew, that really, in my head I also count as mine.

I don't just enjoy 'mommy blogs' so my blog list has a little of everything -- including my son's!
So check them out when you can, I'm sure you'll like them too ~

growth charts

Mikey had his well baby check up, and now Mike is checking a million different growth charts. Mikey is 50th percentile in weight and 12th in height. He was the shortest one when he was born -- 19 inches, and now his Dad is convinced he is going to stay short!

From my understanding, growth charts are used to check that a child is developing proportionately and generally growing in the same pattern. Right?
But it is fun and hard not to compare them when you have four that are so different!

The growth charts we grew up with were based on data from 1977 and were updated in 2000. Apparently, there are even more charts for specific race/ethnic group categories, but I think that is confusing -- I have also come across discussions about the need for having two separate growth charts, one for breastfed babies and one for formula fed babies.
I have no idea which ones where used in our doctor's office 10 years ago or even yesterday, but here is what I remember about my own kids:

Paige was always in the 10th-15th percentile for height and weight.
DJ was always 90th-95th with his head off the charts.
Kelly was 95th in both when she was born, but moved to the 70th in height.
Mikey has been 25th for height and 75th for weight up until this last appointment.

Paige was 7.14 lbs when she was born and 20 inches.
DJ was 6.8 lbs and 20 inches.
Kelly was 9.14 1/2 lbs and 22 inches.
Mikey was 9 lbs and 19 inches.

Paige didn't hit 20 lbs until she was 17 months old (and yes I kept her in an infant seat until then)
DJ was 20 lbs at 6 months old -- he had tripled his birth weight! At 18 months he was 34 lbs and 35 inches tall. (and made me herniate a disc in my back)
Kelly was 23 lbs at a year.
Mikey was 24 lbs.

Paige was exclusively breastfeed. I tried forever to get her to take a bottle... she finally took one when she was 10 months old -- with cow's milk, she never had formula. The recommendations on when to start them on whole milk was 10 months then. I should  never have given her a bottle and just let her have a cup. She nursed until she was 20 months old, but I had a hard time getting the bottle away from her. She would take DJ's from him and hide under the dinning room table to drink them...
DJ seemed really hungry, so at maybe 3 months old I started giving him formula in addition to nursing him. By 10 months old he wasn't interested in nursing. It was around Thanksgiving, so I tell everyone he would say to me, "Thanks for the beverage. May I please have a turkey sandwich?"
Kelly. Kelly was a hungry baby! She would nurse on both sides and then finish off a 6oz bottle when she was 6 weeks old. She did this until she was about 9 - 10 months old and went to formula only for 2 months until she started on whole milk.
Mikey had a couple of bottles with formula when he was smaller -- in the car when we couldn't stop. One day, he just refused to do it anymore. He never liked the pacifier either. He doesn't seem interested in giving up breastfeeding any time soon, and I guess we will just see how it goes over the next few months.
All 4 of them started solids at four months old.

If you can find me a growth chart that will factor in all that, I'd be grateful! I could show it to my husband who is now worried that his other boy won't be playing football.
(DJ can't play because of his ear)

We were also playing around with the height predictors. They calculate the kids size and both parents to see how tall they will be at 18.
Paige's pediatrician told her at her last appointment not to expect to be as tall as me (5'1 3/4") The height predictor says she should be 5'.
All the rest -- 5' 6"!

well baby

I love well baby visits! I am not so thrilled with the shot part, but, oh -- how I love to tell the pediatric staff how awesome my kids are ~ No, really, I love to see how big they are and have people who know what they are talking about reassure me that they are fine.
(and tell me how awesome they are)

Well, Miss Kell had her 5 year old check up, which included all the paperwork for Kindergarten. Very exciting!
My little Sasquatch is 44 inches tall and 50 lbs.

I so love having both my girls be the extreme opposite of each other. Kelly is almost always the tallest of her peers, where Paige was/is always the smallest! At 5 years old, Paige was still wearing a size 4 -- I am now buying Kelly a size 7! (well, really pulling out Paige's old size 7's from the back garage)

Kelly's vision came back 20/50 and now we have to take her to the pediatric opthamologist.
Okay.
I didn't get glasses until 5th grade. Same with DJ. Kelly's uncle Bob got his when he was 6 years old.
If she needs glasses, she needs glasses... better to get them before she starts Kindergarten.
The funny thing is, Paige used to beg for glasses!

At the same visit, Mikey had his 18 month check up. Going to see the doctor is not his favorite thing to do, but he cries only if you try to lay him down on the table.
Mama's Boy is 31 inches and 26 lbs and his Dad thinks he is too short...
{sigh}

Mikey has always had a loud fluttering sound in his heart. Kelly had it too, but outgrew it. Yesterday the pediatrician said that now Mikey's is a little louder than she "likes to hear", so he is going to have a pediatric cardiologist check it out.
First available appointment is in three weeks.
(do they do this on purpose to see how much stress a mother can take?)

I did forget to ask if it was unusual that Mikey could do the wooden shape puzzles. I don't remember any of the other ones doing it at a year and a half, but I could be wrong --

Oh, and yes I do still like taking Paige and DJ to their well baby visits, but they make me call it a well child visit!

brothers and sisters

When I was pregnant with DJ, even though I really wanted another baby, I was extremely worried that I was ruining Paige's life by giving her a sibling. How were either of us going to be able to handle my attention being not solely on her? What if she was jealous? What would I do?
I don't care what all the books tell you, not every child is upset by a new baby. Paige was never upset -- not once. DJ was born and he was ours! He was smiling and laughing out loud for her when he was a week old ~
He followed her everywhere and did everything she said, played every game the way she wanted him to and he was super happy to do it!
(DJ has always been super happy)
Paige was 8 and DJ just turned 6 when Kelly was born. This time, I was concerned that they were so much older they wouldn't get along.
I don't know why I worry about these things. They adored her!

They read to her and sang to her and gladly gave up their "choking hazard" toys.

As Paige grew a little older, she no longer wanted to play with DJ as much, and fortunately by that time, Kelly was old enough to do things with him.

DJ was bossed around his whole life by one sister -- the other one just took over!

I can't tell you how many times DJ has come to us upset because "Kelly said" he couldn't do x, y or z. Our answer is always, "You know, you don't always have to listen to the 2 year old" (or the 3 year old, or the 4 year old) "tell her you won't play with her if she isn't nice".

(hrumph... when Kelly was 3, her pediatrician suggested we find another Alpha Female for her to play with....)

Lately, either DJ has finally found his voice with her, or Kelly has learned to back off, (yeah -- right) but those two are inseparable! You could see it happening, but I have really noticed it more over this school break.

She tells him all the time, "DJ, you are my favorite boy!" and they are singing goofy made up songs and building castles out of blocks and DJ is helping her read.

I for one, am enjoying it all --
Maybe they will all start arguing when they are teenagers. Paige at 13 is pretty mean to the rest of them. Not so much Mikey, she likes him (he LOVES her!) but you can tell that even he is starting to get on her nerves.
And just where will Mikey fit in with all of them? Paige will be off to college when he starts Kindergarten (yikes!) and I don't see him putting up with Kelly's bossy ways!

I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I love Mom t-shirt

I just ordered another *I love Mom* shirt from Pear of Lemons on etsy. Mikey wore the onsie all the time -- so they made him a Big Boy t-shirt just like it.

He is now a model for the onsie on their site I love Mom heart and rose onsie The first order I made, they made a matching bib and leggings for him. I have to say, it is still my favorite bib! (so soft) The leggings are super cute -- but I don't have crawlers, I have walkers! So, while I love the idea, we didn't really use them. Make sure to check out their site. (love etsy!)

Kelly Anne

Since I was 35 when I was pregnant with Kelly, I had many more ultra sounds than I did with Paige and DJ. Every single one, the tech told us she was a girl -- Mike refused to believe it every single time. He was wrong! LOL
The night before my scheduled c-section, I was having contractions. This is not an unusual occurrence for me, but these were pretty intense. I, however, choose to stay in my comfy bed and go to the hospital in the morning as planned. In the early morning of the 22nd, Mike and I left for the hospital on the picturesque road from Hidden Valley Lake to St. Helena. It was even snowing on our way there! Robyn and Vic were getting the kids ready and bringing them a little later.
We check in and get ready. And wait. For a while. They rest of our little family shows up. The doctors were so nice, they were letting Robyn come into the OR with us, so Vic was in a family waiting area with Paige and DJ. Now we are just waiting for the OR to be available.
I was walking around the room and I got back up on the bed and feel a rush of water -- ! I look at Mike and tell him that I think my water broke... Yes, I have had two babies before, but I have had 2 scheduled c-sections before, so this is a whole new thing for me! Sure enough, she was picking the day for her birthday no matter what --
We get to the OR and Robyn and Mike get all suited up. The staff are bantering back and forth saying how rare it was to have a "dry birth". Oh, haha. I hate the hot pillow thing they put on me, but they won't take it off. Can we do this now?
I will tell you that Mike took some GREAT pictures of Kelly being born. I am not sure why they came out as good as they did, because he wasn't looking at all while he took the pictures, but they look professional. In fact, I put them together in a coffee table book. They may not be to every one's taste (you can see her half in half out) so I won't post them here.
They finally pull her out and you hear a collective "oh, wow". The doctor asks Mike to take a picture -- of her cord. It is tied in a "true knot". Thankfully, my babies have extra veins in their cords and they are unusually thick. (Kelly has THE cutest bellybutton)
They clean her up and measure her: 9 lbs 14 1/2 oz and 22 inches @10:35 am My big girl! Mike gets to hold her -- and then Robyn gets to hold her ~
As they are wheeling us back into our room, Vic makes them stop in the hall so he can take pictures --

Her brother and sister are so excited to hold her!

She is such a good baby -- and like her big sister, she is picking up her head and looking around!

Today, my sweet Kelly girl is 5!

NO!

I am sure I read about it somewhere when Paige was a baby. I have this thing about telling a baby "no". It just makes me sad when that is their first word. No one was allowed to say it to when the others were little and now I try to make everyone remember not to say it to Mikey.

I do have a reason behind this, even if it sounds crazy -- it's mainly because "no" is supposed to only be used in a dangerous situation, like running into the street, etc (as if I would ever let them get near the street) So instead we say things like, "that's not for babies" and "that's not okay".

Everyone is on board with this until the TV is either being banged on or turned off in the middle of a show...

Well the little guy is talking more and more every day, and while he has been saying all our names for a while and even things like "good job DJ" and "foootbaaaaaallll" he is now saying things that I am just realizing I must say all the time.

His favorite is:
"Sit! Dowwwwn!"

He also says,
"go get it!" (and points to whatever he just threw)

and now, if you call his name to get his attention, you know, when he is sitting on the coffee table throwing magazines on the floor or climbing on the chair in the kitchen so he can throw the oranges, he looks at you, points his finger and yells "NO!"

crib

So, yeah, uhhh, Mikey doesn't sleep in a crib yet.
I still have the co-sleeper next to the bed (not that he ever slept in that either) to give us more room. I intended to have him in a crib before our family vacation last December, but yeah, that didn't happen. I don't even have a crib set up for him.
I do enjoy having him with us, but really -- he needs to be in in own space. I get out of bed to pee and half the time he screams at me! I am really worried that he is going to start following me in there in the middle of the night and fall on the stairs or something....

When Paige was born, the whole Co-Sleeping vs Ferberizing was very popular. I read all about both while I was pregnant, and I set up her nursery and her crib as if she would actually sleep in there. Well, Paige was my first c-section, and for various reasons, she ended up sleeping on my chest for her first three months. Not my initial plan, but I was good with it. Then she fell off the bed! So I tried to Ferberize her... I couldn't take it. She was crying, I was crying. I just put the bed on the floor. Girl never slept in her crib. Not once.

I didn't really have much of a plan when DJ was born. Not saying I didn't stress it, I did, I just had no real plan -- crib was still in the nursery, Paige still with me. Well, it ended up that DJ couldn't really fall asleep if I was holding him. If I swaddled him and placed him in his bassinet he would fall asleep instantly. Wow. Moved him to the crib when he out grew the bassinet. DJ loooooved his crib! I used to joke that he'd be in it until he was 10 ~ And bonus! Paige would sleep in the room with him!
Ahhh.
Then eventually he climbed out. Bye Bye crib.

Pregnant with Kelly. This time I want the Arms Reach co-sleeper instead of a bassinet. So awesome! Nursed her, put her in it -- she is right there. We even moved home to the city and she was fine with it all. Put the crib up in our room and moved her to it when she tried to climb out of the co-sleeper. She was great. Got one of those dome nets to put over it because she was getting eaten alive by mosquitoes -- totally works too BTW -- and she stayed in it longer because she couldn't climb out. We even moved her to her own room! My "Destructo Baby" did eventually end up pulling the whole dome down and breaking it, but she was ready for a Big Girl bed by then anyway.

Alright. So here we are. Mikey never slept IN the co-sleeper... I know, but he didn't like it. Also, unless he falls asleep in the car, I hold him while he naps. I know...
(I know!)
I am also aware of the fact that I brought this on myself, but I seriously have no idea how I am going to get him into the crib now! So yep, he is sleeping with us still. I am open to any and all suggestions, but I will not let him cry it out.

three day weekend

The last 3 day weekend was so fun, but we did nothing. I am pretty sure we were all in pajamas for most of it. Mike watched football while we played Scrabble on the iTouch he got me for Christmas. DJ and Kelly were attached at the hip as usual, and Paige helped with the baby and read. Seems boring, but I find myself looking at everyone and just loving the moment. Then of course, I wonder if they will all need therapy because we have made them be anti-social along with us....
